Industrial CO2 becomes a valuable resource: Carbon2Chem® at the Circular Valley Convention 2026
The energy and raw materials transition requires a consistent carbon cycle. Instead of simply emitting CO₂, we use it as a raw material and close the carbon cycle in the technosphere.
This is exactly where Carbon2Chem® comes in: With carbon capture and utilization (CCU), we turn industrial point sources into starting points for a circular economy—and enable the defossilization of the basic materials industry.
What is Carbon2Chem®?
Carbon2Chem® is one of the largest publicly funded research and development projects on CCU in Germany. Since 2016, an interdisciplinary consortium from industry and science has been working on the use of CO2-containing waste gases for chemical production. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR).
Overall coordination is handled by the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society, and thyssenkrupp. The central location for the collaboration is the Carbon2Chem® technical center in Duisburg, where we have been conducting research under real conditions since 2018 using metallurgical gases from neighboring steel production.
What makes Carbon2Chem® stand out?
- Practical relevance: Results from the laboratory are validated on a pilot plant scale using real gases – in ongoing operation since 2018.
- System solution instead of isolated solution: We take a holistic approach to CCU – from gas purification and synthesis to integration into existing production environments, including sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory framework conditions.
- Cross-industry: Partners from the steel, chemical, plant engineering, lime, and thermal waste treatment industries are working together to develop scalable solutions for existing industrial sites.
- Ready for use: Our technology modules are designed to meet real industrial requirements and are ready for application.
Why should you talk to us?
If you want to decarbonize your value creation, reduce CO2 costs, and open up new product paths, you need proven solutions. Based on 10 years of research and development under real-world conditions, we offer you reliable insights and ready-to-use modules for CCU – from concept to implementation.
Benefit from our experience along the entire chain: CO2 capture, processing, flexible use with green hydrogen, and synthesis into value-adding chemicals.
